Warner Bros. Revives ‘The Goonies’ Franchise with New Movie in Development

Warner Bros. is reportedly breathing new life into the beloved franchise, "The Goonies," with a sequel now in development. The studio aims to capitalize on proven franchises, marking a strategic shift that sees the follow-up to the 1985 adventure film finally underway. This development comes after several years of speculation and stalled talks, largely due to challenges in finding the right storyline.

Discussions about a sequel have persisted for years, despite renowned director Steven Spielberg expressing skepticism about a follow-up in 2020. The primary hurdle was the inability of writers to craft a compelling narrative for a second installment. Adding to the uncertainty, Corey Feldman, who played a central role in the original film, admitted just a month before director Richard Donner's passing in July 2021 that a sequel seemed improbable.

The tragic passing of Richard Donner further complicated prospects for a sequel. However, hope remains as Ke Huy Quan expressed a willingness to reprise his role as Richard 'Data' Wang in 2023, despite doubts about moving forward without Donner's guidance.

"Sadly, we lost the captain of our ship [Richard], who I love dearly, and I really don't know if there will be Goonies 2, but I would be open to reliving that character if there is that opportunity." – Ke Huy Quan

In an exciting development, Chris Columbus, co-scribe of the original "The Goonies" and writer of the 1984 "Gremlins," has agreed to pen the script for the new movie. Columbus's renewed inspiration to write came after celebrating the 35th anniversary of "The Goonies."

"I think I probably believed it the most over the pandemic. Because I thought, 'OK it's [The Goonies] 35th anniversary, we did two reunions in one year, we went back and read the script together." – Sean Astin

Fans of the original film can anticipate the return of familiar faces. The sequel is expected to feature actors Josh Brolin, Ke Huy Quan, Sean Astin, Corey Feldman, Jeff Cohen, Martha Plimpton, and Kerri Green reprising their roles as the grown-up versions of the adventurous kids. However, details regarding a potential release date remain undisclosed.

"First of all, we have the big man here tonight and that would be Steven Spielberg and that's one thing everyone should ask him." – Ke Huy Quan

The original film's script was crafted by Chris Columbus and Steven Spielberg, setting high expectations for this new installment. Alongside his work on "The Goonies," Chris Columbus is also developing a script for a new "Gremlins" movie.

"Well, Sean Astin and Josh Brolin want a sequel but you know. It's one of those powers-that-be things." – Sean Astin
