Amazon has emerged as the largest corporate purchaser of renewable energy, leading the way in sustainability with significant investments in green power. According to BloombergNEF, the e-commerce giant added approximately 100 new renewable projects in 2023, elevating its renewable portfolio to over 33 gigawatts of generating capacity. This achievement places Amazon more than 10 gigawatts ahead of its closest competitor, Apple.
Amazon's commitment to renewable energy stems from its ambitious goal to reach net zero emissions by 2040. The company's efforts have already yielded positive results, with a notable reduction in carbon intensity. By investing heavily in zero-carbon power, Amazon has effectively managed to slow down or reverse the growth of carbon intensity relative to its overall emissions.
One of the key components of Amazon's sustainability strategy is addressing its electricity emissions. The company has substantially reduced its Scope 2 emissions through its extensive renewable and storage contracts. These contracts have the potential to supply power to 8.3 million homes, underscoring their scale and impact. Furthermore, Amazon's data centers have been fully powered by renewable energy, further contributing to this reduction.
Despite these advancements, Amazon's total emissions peaked in 2021 following years of sharp increases. The majority of these emissions fall under Scope 3, which covers indirect emissions from business activities over which Amazon exercises less control. This highlights the ongoing challenge for Amazon to tackle these emissions while continuing its growth trajectory.
The upcoming release of Amazon's 2024 sustainability report is eagerly anticipated as it will provide a comprehensive overview of the company's progress towards its environmental goals. This report will be crucial in assessing the full impact of Amazon's renewable energy projects and their role in reducing overall emissions.
