Anthropic announced its new Citations feature on Thursday, marking a significant enhancement in AI model capabilities. This feature, available for select models such as Claude 3.5 Sonnet and Claude 3.5 Haiku, is designed to improve the accuracy of AI-generated responses by providing detailed references to the exact sentences and passages used from source documents. Citations is especially beneficial in applications like document summarization, Q&A, customer support, and any other areas where precise source referencing is crucial.
The Citations feature provides developers with the ability to incorporate source files, ensuring that AI models automatically cite claims derived from these files. This capability is crucial for "grounding" AI responses in verified source documents, thereby increasing reliability and trustworthiness. Available through Anthropic’s API and Google’s Vertex AI platform, Citations supports a variety of source documents, including emails.
Despite its innovative approach, Citations is not universally available across all of Anthropic’s models. It is currently implemented only in the Claude 3.5 Sonnet and Claude 3.5 Haiku models. Users interested in utilizing Citations should be aware of potential charges that accompany its usage, which depend on the length and number of source documents processed. For instance, using Citations with a roughly-100-page document costs approximately $0.30 with Claude 3.5 Sonnet and $0.08 with Claude 3.5 Haiku.
Citations uses Anthropic's standard API pricing structure, making it a cost-effective tool for developers who require authenticated references in their AI applications. This feature holds particular value for academic and professional writing domains where citation accuracy is paramount.
