“A Taste of AI: Jack Neo’s New Film Blends Tradition with Technology”

The renowned filmmaker Jack Neo is set to captivate audiences once again with his latest cinematic endeavor, which opens in Singapore cinemas on January 24. The movie, rich with cultural nuances and cutting-edge technology, features a compelling storyline centered around Ong Dongnan, played by Henry Thia, and his partnership with food critic-influencer Douyin Jie, portrayed by Dawn Yeoh, as they embark on the ambitious journey of opening a Chinese restaurant. The film also stars Terence Cao, Jae Liew, Yang Guang Ke Le, and Shawn Thia, forming a robust cast that promises to deliver engaging performances.

In a groundbreaking move for Neo, the film marks his inaugural use of artificial intelligence (AI) technology in filmmaking. Notably, eight out of the nine songs in the movie's soundtrack are sung by AI, showcasing the potential of technology to redefine creative processes. Neo's bold integration of AI does not stop at music; he has also revealed that 95% of the music video featured in the end credits springs from AI innovation.

"Such technology is earth-shattering and subversive to creative thinking, but for someone like me who likes music but can't compose, it's suitable for me." – Jack Neo

The narrative intricately weaves AI's influence into the plot, portraying it as both a boon and a bane. Ong Dongnan's venture takes an unexpected turn when AI technology becomes his downfall. In this drama entwined with elements of family and technology, Patricia Mok takes on the role of Ling Ling, an AI robot that assists Dongnan. Meanwhile, Aileen Tan portrays Mrs. Ong, Dongnan's supportive spouse.

Neo's motivation behind the film extends beyond entertainment; he aims to broaden audiences' understanding of AI.

"I want to take this opportunity to let the audience know more about AI and expand their perspectives about it. We shouldn't be afraid of AI and should instead learn more about them, understand them fully and conquer them, so that we are able to utilise them." – Jack Neo

Despite the innovative use of AI, Neo is cautious about its current limitations in scriptwriting. He believes that human relationships contain intricacies that AI cannot yet replicate.

"I think it's impossible for AI to do scriptwriting [at this point in time]. There are many details in human relationships which I believe AI wouldn't be able to capture. After all, human beings are complex." – Jack Neo

The film's storyline draws inspiration from various life events, including war, according to Neo. He faced significant challenges in developing new ideas for this project.

"I was facing difficulties thinking of new ideas for a movie. Those who had worked on scriptwriting with me would know that we went through many ideas and rounds of editing. At some point I thought, 'Maybe I won't release a movie this year'," – Jack Neo

Henry Thia admitted that filming this movie was one of his most challenging experiences. This sentiment underscores the film's ambitious scope and the dedication required from its cast and crew to bring such a multifaceted story to life.

Neo's concerns extend to the reception of his work as he reflects on the fears filmmakers harbor about audience engagement.

"I think as filmmakers, what we are most afraid of is not having anyone looking forward to our movies anymore." – Jack Neo

The film not only delves into technological themes but also explores societal issues such as pride and conflict. Neo has shared profound reflections on personal pride and its implications.

"I just want the audience to know that there's no purpose in an argument. There are many times when arguments arise because of people's own pride. Having lived for nearly 65 years, I have come to realise that sometimes, pride is worthless." – Jack Neo

"Losing face won't cause you to die" – Jack Neo
