Threads, a social media platform launched by Meta in 2023, is embarking on a new chapter by testing advertisements in the United States and Japan. Initially, Threads concentrated on rapid user growth, a strategy that has borne fruit with the platform boasting over 275 million monthly active users as of last August. By December, the company had 100 million active users. The decision to introduce ads marks a significant shift from its original focus on expanding its user base to exploring monetization avenues.
The ads experiment represents an expansion of a previous test and involves select brands. Instagram head Adam Mosseri emphasized the importance of user feedback in this new endeavor, stating the company will carefully evaluate responses before considering a broader rollout in other markets.
"We know there will be plenty of feedback about how we should approach ads, and we are making sure they feel like Threads posts you’d find relevant and interesting," – Adam Mosseri
Last April, Mosseri hinted at the company’s intention to introduce ads to the platform. However, by August, Meta had not laid out any immediate plans for an extensive rollout. Now, the current experiment indicates a possible strategic move to leverage Threads' growing scale. The platform's positive user engagement has been a driving factor behind this decision.
Meta's CEO, Mark Zuckerberg, previously indicated that Threads' primary focus was on user retention and growth. By venturing into ads, Threads appears to be capitalizing on its established user engagement and expanding its business model. As a rival to Meta's other platform, X, Threads is positioning itself as a versatile player in the social media landscape.
To ensure the success of this new venture, Mosseri mentioned that the company would closely monitor the test phase.
"We’ll closely monitor this test before scaling it more broadly, with the goal of getting ads on Threads to a place where they are as interesting as organic content," – Adam Mosseri
This approach reflects Threads' commitment to maintaining an engaging user experience while integrating advertising content seamlessly.
