Barbie Hsu, a renowned Taiwanese actress and host, passed away at the age of 48 during a family trip to Japan. Best known for her captivating role in the 2001 hit drama "Meteor Garden" and its sequel, Hsu's untimely death was due to pneumonia caused by the flu during the Chinese New Year period. Her sudden demise has left a profound impact on her family and fans worldwide.
Barbie Hsu rose to fame with her leading role in "Meteor Garden," which became a cultural phenomenon across Asia. Alongside her acting career, she was part of the pop duo Asos with her sister Dee Hsu, who is two years younger. The sisters made waves in the entertainment industry with their dynamic performances and charming presence. In 2012, Hsu showcased her exceptional talent by winning the Best Actress award at the Golden Lotus Awards for her role in "Croczilla."
Beyond her professional accomplishments, Hsu's personal life was equally eventful. She had a secret relationship with South Korean singer-DJ Koo Jun-yup in 1998, which eventually blossomed into marriage in 2012 after her divorce from Wang Xiaofei. Together with Xiaofei, she had two children, Hsi-lin and Hsi-yueh. Hsu's relationship with Xiaofei turned contentious when she filed lawsuits against him in 2023 for defamation and again in 2024 over financial disputes.
Hsu's family was present in Japan during her passing, where she was cremated. Her ashes were later brought back to Taiwan, where her legacy continues to be cherished. Her former husband, Wang Xiaofei, is reportedly traveling from Thailand to Taiwan upon hearing the tragic news.
Reflecting on their bond, Dee Hsu expressed profound gratitude and love for her sister.
"I am thankful to have been her sister in this life, and I will always be grateful to her and miss her. Barbie, rest in peace. I will always love you. Together remember forever." – Dee Hsu
Barbie Hsu's husband, Koo Jun-yup, recalled their renewed commitment to each other through marriage.
