OpenAI Veterans Forge New Paths: Schulman Joins Murati’s Stealth Startup

John Schulman, a co-founder of OpenAI and renowned architect behind ChatGPT, has left Anthropic just five months after joining, and is reportedly set to join Mira Murati's enigmatic new startup. Murati, who departed OpenAI in September, has been shrouded in secrecy regarding her latest venture. The specifics of Schulman's role within Murati's company remain unclear, but his involvement signals a significant shift in the landscape of artificial intelligence.

Murati's new enterprise, still unnamed and a fresh entity in the AI sector, has drawn considerable attention yet remains largely under wraps. Despite her departure from OpenAI earlier this year, Murati continues to keep details about her startup close to her chest. Notably, she engaged in discussions to secure over $100 million in funding for the company as recently as October. However, Fortune was unable to glean further insights into the startup's operations or objectives.

Christian Gibson, another former member of the OpenAI team, has also joined Murati’s secretive initiative. Gibson previously contributed to OpenAI's supercomputing efforts, adding further depth to the expertise being amassed within the nascent company. The recruitment of such high-profile talent hints at ambitious undertakings ahead for the new venture.

Schulman's exit from Anthropic came as a surprise to many, especially given his brief tenure there since leaving OpenAI in August. While his position at Anthropic was not explicitly defined, his sudden departure underscores the dynamic nature of the AI industry and the fierce competition for top-tier talent among leading tech innovators.
