President Donald Trump has stirred debate over U.S. trade policy by delaying the removal of a trade exemption that predominantly affects certain Chinese imports. This rule, known as the "de minimis" rule, allows low-cost goods to enter the United States without facing taxes. Originally signed into law in 1930, the rule has become a point of contention due to its potential influence on international trade dynamics.
On the same day Trump postponed ending this exemption, Shopify, a leading e-commerce platform, made its stance clear through a blog post. The company expressed its concerns regarding the potential cancellation of the de minimis rule, highlighting the significant impact on small businesses and its own operations. Shopify, which facilitates over $20 billion in annual cross-border sales and commands approximately 10% of the global e-commerce market, stands to lose substantially if the de minimis exemption is removed.
