Harrison Ford Joins Marvel Universe: A Presidential Transformation

Harrison Ford ventures into the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) with his latest role as Thaddeus 'Thunderbolt' Ross, the newly-elected U.S. President who also transforms into the formidable Red Hulk. Taking over from the late William Hurt, Ford steps into a character well-established in the Marvel comics, bringing it to a new conclusion. Despite being initially unfamiliar with the MCU, Ford was drawn to the role after witnessing his fellow actors having fun within this vibrant universe. He expressed a desire to be part of this world and enjoy the experience alongside them.

Ford's portrayal of Ross promises a mix of political intrigue and high-stakes drama. The film, set to release in Singapore theatres on February 13, features a gripping plot that combines elements of a political thriller with the superhero genre. Ross finds himself working with Sam Wilson, portrayed by Anthony Mackie, who assumes the mantle of the new Captain America. Together, they face the challenge of halting a global conspiracy before dire consequences unfold.

The character of Ross is not just a political figure; he harbors a complex relationship with Bruce Banner's Hulk, played by Mark Ruffalo. Although Ross has a clear disdain for the Hulk, he is also intrigued by the potential to control and harness this incredible power. Ford has shared that his interactions with Ruffalo were delightful, humorously remarking:

"Come on, Mark! Let's get ready to rumble!" – Harrison

In preparing for the role of President Ross, Ford consciously chose not to draw inspiration from current political contexts. Instead, he focused on the essence of escapism and entertainment that Marvel films offer. Ford elucidated his approach to the role by stating:

"I did not want to bring any particular representation or allusion to the political context that we're living in now," – Harrison

"I don't think that's appropriate to the circumstances of this film, and it wasn't necessary for me. It's the wit of the escapism that is important." – Harrison

He emphasized the film's ability to engage audiences through its intricate plotlines and character dynamics:

"It's the pleasure that is supplied to the audience through seeing the characters work themselves through these naughty problems." – Harrison

Ford also highlighted how the film weaves in unique elements characteristic of Marvel storytelling:

"and then some fabulous additions, which spice it up and bring it into the Marvel context" – Harrison

His portrayal aims to provide emotional depth and realism amidst the extraordinary happenings within the Marvel universe:

"The Marvel characters themselves certainly have wonderfully interesting aspects of their personalities, but what I was looking for in the role of the President was an emotional reality and an emotional issue that he could work through in the context of the overall story." – Harrison

"And supply some human behaviour and context for all of the fantastic things that are going on around him." – Harrison

Ford's enthusiasm for unusual characters in extraordinary circumstances shines through:

"Excitement, entertainment, spectacle, and unusual characters in unusual circumstances. I find all of that very interesting" – Harrison
