Sean Baker’s “Anora” Triumphs at DGA Awards, Sets Sights on Oscars

The 53-year-old filmmaker, Sean Baker, clinched the Outstanding Directorial Achievement in Theatrical Feature Film award for his comedy-drama "Anora" at the Directors Guild of America (DGA) Awards. Held on February 8 at the Beverly Hilton hotel in Los Angeles, the event witnessed Baker's win, positioning him as a frontrunner for the prestigious Best Director prize at the upcoming Academy Awards. Historically, 19 of the last 22 DGA Theatrical Feature award winners have gone on to secure the Best Director accolade at the Oscars.

Baker's "Anora," shot on film in New York City in 2023, defied odds with its production on a modest budget of US$6 million (S$8.14 million). In his acceptance speech, Baker acknowledged the challenges faced during production and praised lead actress Mikey Madison for her transformative performance.

"Obviously I've tortured you and I'm so sorry. They were able to pull off a US$6 million (S$8.14 million) film shot on film in New York City in 2023 — almost an impossibility." – Sean Baker

"Working with [Mikey] has changed the way I will be directing actors in the future, because of what she gave. Hearing her incredible ideas… a year before production, what she wanted to bring to the production and what she did bring to it. [She has] an incredible career ahead." – Sean Baker

The DGA Awards ceremony, hosted for the sixth time by Judd Apatow, was an evening of celebration for many talented directors. RaMell Ross took home the Michael Apted First-Time Theatrical Feature Film prize for "Nickel Boys," while Brendan Bellomo and Slava Leontyev were honored with the Documentary award for "Porcelain War." Apatow humorously acknowledged his own role compared to the award recipients.

"That is why he is being honoured and I am hosting for the sixth time." – Judd Apatow

Notably, Ang Lee received the Lifetime Achievement Award, presented by Michelle Yeoh. Lee reflected on his illustrious career and aspirations.

"I hope that my whole career can be a never-ending film school." – Ang Lee

The DGA Awards also highlighted achievements in television, recognizing Frederick E.O. Toye for Dramatic Series and Lucia Aniello for Comedy Series. Baker expressed his gratitude and surprise at receiving the honor.

"My imposter syndrome is skyrocketing right now, as well as my cortisol levels. It's such an honour to be recognised by my peers." – Sean Baker
