Outrage has erupted in India following reports of the deportation of Indian nationals from the United States under distressing conditions. Prithviraj Sathe, a user on social media platform X, voiced his discontent over the treatment of the deportees, who arrived in India handcuffed and leg-chained like criminals. The deportation, marked by inhumane conditions such as a single toilet for the entire long-haul flight, has sparked anger both online and offline.
Images shared on social media depict the distressing arrival of these individuals, handcuffed and shackled, which have further fueled public indignation. The deportation process itself has come under heavy criticism, with many condemning the ill-treatment of these Indian nationals. Opposition politicians in India have taken up the cause, staging protests against what they perceive as a significant diplomatic issue between India and the US.
Prominent Congress party leader K.C. Venugopal led a symbolic protest within parliament by wearing handcuffs, highlighting the perceived injustice faced by the deportees. The act aimed to draw attention to the plight of those affected and to urge government intervention on their behalf.
“from the US in the most inhumane way – handcuffed, leg-chained, treated like criminals. One toilet for a long-haul flight” – Prithviraj Sathe
Pawan Khera, a Congress spokesman, also expressed his outrage on X, lamenting the humiliation faced by his fellow Indians during the deportation process.
“Looking at the pictures of Indians getting handcuffed and humiliated while being deported from the US saddens me as an Indian.” – Pawan Khera
The deportation has not only incited public anger but also raised questions about diplomatic relations between the US and India. The exact circumstances and reasons for these deportations remain unclear, adding to the frustration and demand for clarity from both governments.
