Reddit has initiated testing on AI-powered search results pages designed to summarize and recommend content across its diverse communities. This move aligns with the company's strategy to enhance user experience and improve engagement. As part of this effort, Reddit is in the process of recruiting engineers to build a "small search team" focused on these innovative capabilities. Despite witnessing a 39% year-over-year increase in daily active unique users to 101.7 million, Reddit's user metrics fell short of investor expectations, which were pegged at 103.1 million.
Reddit's plan to launch an upgraded search experience aims to facilitate users in navigating the platform more efficiently and addressing "subjective, hard, and interesting questions." This will be achieved through the integration of Reddit Answers, a feature that allows visitors to pose questions and receive curated summaries of relevant responses and threads. In a bid to drive growth, retention, and revenue, the company intends to incorporate search as part of the platform's onboarding process.
The company's fiscal Q4 metrics were notably impacted by changes to Google's search algorithm, underscoring the need for a robust internal search mechanism. Last year, Reddit expanded its AI-powered translation services to new territories and introduced AI-driven insights for brands. These initiatives reflect the company's commitment to leveraging artificial intelligence to enhance its offerings.
Reddit's CEO, Steve Huffman, has indicated that the upgraded search experience is scheduled for launch over the current year. He emphasized the potential of Reddit Answers in unlocking the vast repository of information contributed by users over the platform's two-decade history.
"In Reddit conversations, for 20 years, our users have left this absolutely massive corpus of information, so we’re starting to unlock that with Answers," stated Reddit CEO Steve Huffman.
Additionally, Huffman highlighted the importance of integrating search functionalities into various aspects of user interaction on the platform.
"I think helping the user be able to search directly on Reddit, refine their queries on Reddit, eventually come directly to Reddit for those types of queries, and even integrating search into something like onboarding over time — I think [these are] really interesting things," he added.
Drew Vollero, Reddit's CFO, confirmed that the company is actively seeking engineers to spearhead the development of this new search team. The introduction of AI-powered search results is expected to significantly improve user experience by offering refined and relevant content recommendations.
