On Thursday, February 20, tensions flared in the South China Sea when China's military reportedly warned and drove away three Philippine aircraft that allegedly intruded into the airspace near the Spratly Islands. The incident highlights the ongoing territorial disputes in the region, a vital waterway for over $3 trillion in annual ship-borne commerce. More than 50 Chinese maritime militia vessels and a Chinese coast guard ship were spotted during this exercise, marking a significant show of force by Beijing.
China's Southern Theatre Command accused the Philippine side of attempting to "peddle its illegal claims" through provocative actions. This accusation comes as the Philippines seeks to assert its sovereignty, sovereign rights, and maritime jurisdiction in the West Philippine Sea. Despite a 2016 arbitration ruling that invalidated China's expansive claims in the South China Sea, Beijing has refused to recognize the decision.
"Clumsy manoeuvre is doomed to failure," China's Southern Theatre Command stated, reinforcing their stance on the matter.
The Philippines conducted a maritime domain awareness flight over the Kalayaan Islands on Thursday, which Beijing disputed. Earlier in the week, the Philippines accused the Chinese navy of executing dangerous flight maneuvers when they flew close to a government aircraft patrolling the contested Scarborough Shoal. These maneuvers have intensified already strained relations between the two nations.
China claims sovereignty over nearly the entire South China Sea, leading to conflicts with several Southeast Asian countries, including Brunei, Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, and Vietnam. The Philippine embassy in Beijing has remained silent on the Chinese military's statement regarding the recent incident.
Both nations continue to assert their claims in the region, with China maintaining a strong military presence and the Philippines emphasizing international law's rulings in its favor. The South China Sea dispute remains a contentious issue, drawing global attention due to its strategic importance.
