Chubu Airport Marks 20 Years Amid Challenges and Ambitions

Chubu Airport, located in central Japan's Aichi prefecture, celebrated its 20th anniversary on February 17. As the airport navigates the aftermath of the COVID-19 pandemic, boosting international operations remains a top priority. The recovery of inbound travelers has been sluggish, particularly with demand for flights to North America and China yet to fully resume. Under the leadership of President and CEO Riki Inuzuka, who assumed his role in June 2019, the airport has been focused on expanding its passenger services to meet these challenges head-on.

Riki Inuzuka has steered Chubu Airport through the unprecedented disruptions brought by the pandemic. His strategic vision involves positioning the airport as a key player in attracting more inbound tourists to Central Japan. The intensifying competition from local rivals adds another layer of complexity to this mission. Nonetheless, Inuzuka remains committed to ensuring the airport's growth and relevance in the region's aviation landscape.

"We aim to remain an airport that can provide comfort while accommodating more than 20 million passengers (as targeted for fiscal 2030)." – Riki Inuzuka

Chubu Airport's efforts to enhance passenger services are crucial for its revival and for boosting tourism in Central Japan. Despite the slow recovery of international travel, the airport is investing in infrastructure and services to better serve its passengers. These improvements are a testament to the airport's dedication to offering a world-class experience, even as it faces ongoing challenges.

The demand for flights to key destinations such as North America and China remains below pre-pandemic levels. This presents a significant obstacle for Chubu Airport, as these routes are vital for its international operations. The airport's management is actively seeking ways to stimulate demand and restore these crucial connections.
