Constantine 2: Keanu Reeves and Francis Lawrence Confirm Sequel in Development

The long-awaited sequel to the cult classic film "Constantine" is finally moving forward, with Keanu Reeves reprising his role as John Constantine. The new film, set in the same world as the original 2005 movie, will see Reeves collaborating once again with director Francis Lawrence. Both are enthusiastic about the project, which has been in development for over a decade. After years of speculation, the story for the sequel is now ready, and the script is actively being developed.

In 2020, the idea gained traction when the team, including producer Akiva Goldsman, pitched the concept to DC Studios, who gave the green light. The sequel promises a more mature take on the supernatural detective's adventures, maintaining the R-rating of its predecessor.

"We've been trying to make this film for over a decade, and we just recently put a story together and pitched it to DC Studios and they said, 'Okay.' So, we're going to try and write a script." – Keanu Reeves

The development of "Constantine 2" gained momentum following a Zoom call around the 15th anniversary of the original film. It was during this call that the creative team decided to push forward with renewed vigor. According to Lawrence, they have been meticulously reviewing comics to craft a compelling narrative that fans will appreciate.

"The truth is, somewhere around the 15th anniversary or something, we did a Zoom call and we all were discussing trying to get it up and going again. And again, we were just more active with it and finally got it past all these hurdles." – Francis Lawrence

Lawrence expressed excitement about making a truly R-rated sequel, reflecting on how the original film adhered to PG-13 rules despite its R rating.

"We had been thinking about it. We had also been given an R-rating when we kind of made a PG-13 movie and followed all the PG-13 rules." – Francis Lawrence

"F*** it, let's go and do a sequel and really make an R-rated movie. Give us an R, let us make a real R-rated movie." – Francis Lawrence

The filmmakers believe that the world is now ready for a continuation of Constantine's story. The original film's transformation into a cult classic has spurred renewed interest.

"So it's really not that it's just like, 'Oh yeah, now we think the world is ready for it.' I certainly think there is a bigger fan base and certainly it's become a kind of cult classic, which has been really exciting to see and very strange, but it's something we've always loved." – Francis Lawrence
