The 1MDB scandal, one of the largest financial frauds in history, continues to unravel with new developments. 1Malaysia Development Berhad (1MDB) withdrew its lawsuit against Riza Aziz, the producer of "The Wolf of Wall Street," for the alleged misappropriation of US$248 million. The lawsuit withdrawal marks a significant turn in the long-standing legal battle linked to a global corruption scandal involving high-profile individuals and billions of dollars reportedly looted from Malaysian state coffers.
The scandal's roots trace back to top officials allegedly embezzling billions and using the funds for extravagant global spending sprees. Jho Low, a fugitive businessman, is considered the mastermind behind these illicit activities. The scandal led to investigations across the United States, Switzerland, and Singapore, highlighting the international dimensions of the case.
In 2023, Pras Michel, a rapper from The Fugees, was found guilty of aiding Low in channeling money from 1MDB into U.S. politics. Leonardo DiCaprio, a prominent actor, also testified in court about Low's lavish parties and spending sprees, underscoring the scandal's reach into Hollywood.
Riza Aziz, stepson of Najib Razak—Malaysia's former premier ousted in 2018 due to the scandal—became a focal point in the legal proceedings. Although 1MDB dropped charges against him in 2020 following a global settlement, they refiled the lawsuit in 2021. However, Riza Aziz did not contest the U.S. Department of Justice's civil forfeiture case against him and agreed to return approximately US$107 million in assets to Malaysia in 2020.
"My client was charged in 2019, and in 2020 the charges were dropped against him and there was a global settlement," stated Farhan.
Despite the refiled lawsuit, 1MDB withdrew the charges again in 2023. Muhammad Farhan Muhammad Shafee, Riza Aziz's lawyer, expressed satisfaction with this decision.
"Our defence in that matter is that you cannot file this claim as we have already settled," added Farhan.
"Riza is relieved, but more so because this entire suit should never have proceeded to trial had 1MDB conducted their due diligence on the existence of the earlier global settlement upon being informed of the same through his statement of defence."
The scandal's proceeds were reportedly used to acquire luxurious real estate in Beverly Hills, New York, and London. Meanwhile, Najib Razak currently serves his jail sentence but is edging closer to serving the remainder at home.
