In a presentation that stirred debate, Alexandr Wang, CEO of Scale AI, addressed attendees at the Web Summit Qatar. Wang outlined his perspective on the escalating competition between the United States and China to dominate the realm of artificial intelligence (AI). He confidently asserted that the United States is poised to win this "AI war," a claim he has previously publicized in a full-page advertisement in the Washington Post. Despite his confident proclamation, the audience's response suggested significant skepticism regarding Wang's prediction.
Wang, who hails from Los Alamos, New Mexico—a town renowned as the birthplace of the atomic bomb—spoke with authority on technological advancements. His upbringing was steeped in scientific endeavor; his parents were physicists at Los Alamos National Laboratory. Today, Scale AI, under Wang's leadership, collaborates with major US corporations such as Microsoft, OpenAI, and Meta. The company specializes in providing an AI data engine and developing AI applications, some tailored for the defense sector.
During his talk, Wang expressed concern that AI technology could enable China to surpass Western military capabilities. He highlighted how AI is poised to transform national security, emphasizing that US models generally support free speech. In contrast, he noted that many Chinese large language models (LLMs) are embedded with government censorship reflecting communist ideology.
Interestingly, while Wang's talk coincided with Scale AI announcing a new agreement to assist the Qatar government in developing 50 AI-powered applications across sectors like education and healthcare, it was his comments on international AI competition that attracted most attention. When asked for their opinion about Wang's prediction of US victory in the AI race, only two attendees agreed. A considerable majority of the audience disagreed with his outlook.
