Gila monsters, one of the most famous reptiles of North America’s deserts, have a tenuous future. Climate change is putting these animals in an existential crisis by completely changing their habitats. These remarkable animals destroy exceptionally hot ecosystems one at a time, only to choose the coolest pockets of air from within their scorching hot desert habitat. According to researchers, the habitat requirements of Gila monsters—especially within the clear salute of the Mojave Desert—are still not understood.
Beyond being naturally elusive, Gila monsters have difficulty traversing areas with rough topography and little to no plant cover. It is precisely their elusive nature that has drawn them from view for the majority of their existence. This makes studying their movement patterns overall pretty difficult. Recent research has integrated data on Gila monsters’ movements into simulations to better understand how climate change might impact their survival.
The study utilized three datasets that tracked 62 Gila monsters through radio transmitters, allowing researchers to analyze their movements and habitat preferences. The findings suggest that while some regions may become more hospitable for Gila monsters due to climate change, many areas will become inhospitable. Even under barriers, higher emissions scenarios put the long-term survival of Gila monsters at risk. By 2082, large chunks of their dream arid environment might disappear, killing off greater than a 3rd of their acceptable vary.

The researchers reported that over 90 percent of both current and potential future habitats for Gila monsters in the Mojave are located within public lands. Forty-three percent of these lands—95 million acres—are in protected status, including federal, state, and locally designated protected areas.
