Jose Luis Ballester, a 21-year-old golfer and senior at Arizona State University, made headlines during the opening round of the Masters tournament after an unexpected incident. While playing alongside professional golfer Justin Thomas, Ballester stepped away to urinate in a tributary to Rae’s Creek, drawing attention from patrons and media alike.
The accident happened as Thomas was tending to a problem on the 13th green. Ballester made a name for himself last year when he won the U.S. Amateur. At one point, during a break in the action, he seized the opportunity and peed right in front of the amazed audience. The brief moment instantly became a transatlantic talking point, drawing acclaim from across the world.
After the incident, in response, Ballester and his team released an apology to Augusta National Golf Club. He also accepted that his conduct was offensive, apologising for any humiliation his actions might have caused.
