Chris Tangey, an award-winning independent producer and director from Alice Springs, is attracting international attention with his new film. He’s touring it now to the World Expo in Osaka, Japan. Tangey has called Alice Springs home for 37 years. In the intervening years he has emerged as a pioneer of drone cinematography, winning more than 50 international and Australian awards for his exceptional visual storytelling. His films have been a canvas for the dazzling visuals of the Australian outback. They are a perfect representation of Australia’s theme for the Expo – “Chasing the Sun.”
Tangey’s films will be featured on 12-metre by 6-metre screens at the Australia Pavilion in Osaka. Through six months, guests can view nine of his short films. These movies wonderfully capture the sights and sounds that make Australia, well, Australia. Tangey’s most notable accomplishment is “Living in Australia.” With Wings — the world’s first wildlife documentary shot entirely from a drone.

He acknowledges the significance of his roots in Alice Springs, stating, “I got into cameras and out of radio because of Alice, Alice is a great place to reinvent yourself.” He began his filmmaking career in a dynamic local creative economy. On top of this, his film “Living in Australia” is important in the field for being an early and innovative use of drone technology. “It’s the first wildlife film in the world that I know of that’s shot entirely by drone,” he proudly states. Beauty in brief The film lasts only four-and-a-half minutes. For Tangey, that represented a major opportunity and huge risk challenge, requiring detailed planning and flawless execution.
