Earlier this month, OpenAI started releasing a new memory feature to ChatGPT, with the goal of making chats more personal and relevant by remembering details from previous chats. This new improvement gives the AI more freedom to personalize its answers. This way, users enjoy more tailored and dynamic engagement rooted in their history of interactions.
This functionality is being released initially to ChatGPT Pro and Plus subscribers. Users located in the U.K., EU, Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway, and Switzerland will not be able to use it. This regulatory decision in many ways mirrors OpenAI’s recent decision to double down on improving the paid tiers of its service. A spokesperson from OpenAI reiterated this commitment, stating, “We are focused on the rollout to paid tiers for now.”
In the past, any time ChatGPT needed to update its memory, it would need your specific instruction to do so, which could break conversational context. The new memory feature makes this kind of personalizations much easier, allowing the AI to remember and unremember certain details on command. This new ability rolled out last year, but the most recent update is focused on rolling out a more natural and intuitive interaction.
In the settings menu of ChatGPT, users will find the new feature under “reference saved memories.” This gives them the control that they need over these permanently saved memories. Users will have the option to disable memory entirely or customize certain settings, which would help improve individual saved memories. If you were an early user of ChatGPT’s memory features, this new functionality will be automatically turned on for you.
OpenAI’s announcement coincides with an emerging wave of AI across the tech landscape. In February, Google launched a comparable memory feature within its Gemini platform, showcasing a wider trend toward personalized AI interactions.
We expect this new memory feature to drive significantly higher user engagement to the app. It will provide customized answers that’ll respond to your unique opinion and previous chats. OpenAI has released ChatGPT and is continuing to improve its AI. This update is a big jump in making the experience much more personalized to what users are looking for.
