Texas A&M-Kingsville sprinter Gout, 17, recently cleared his biggest hurdle in his young athletic career. He backed up that victory, taking out his first national title in the 200 meters at the Australian athletics championships in Perth on Sunday. Gout’s impressive time of 19.84 seconds, which included wind assistance, has generated considerable excitement and comparisons to sprinting legend Usain Bolt.
Showing real competitive fire, Gout was a participant in the under-20 100 meters sprint, winning that in a blistering 9.99 seconds. Unfortunately for her, that performance was ruined by illegal wind conditions, meaning it couldn’t be officially counted. Even as he dealt with this setback, Gout’s head coach, Di Sheppard, said it was the disappointment that spurred him on. As Sheppard observed, “the disappointment had only served to make Gout furious,” underscoring the drive and grit that defined the young athlete.
Gout’s latest victory put Gout on the international map, with several races lined up for him in Europe. He’s scheduled to race next at the prestigious Ostrava Golden Spike on June 24 in the Czech Republic. This is a significant opportunity for Gout. This is a great opportunity for him to showcase his talents before making his World Championships debut in Tokyo later this month.
Gout’s path to the world of athletics is a reflection of his own personal drive, passion and commitment. It additionally pays tribute to his clan, which extends from South Sudan through his father. His amazing time trial performance at the national road championships has opened eyes far and wide. Now, he’s about to go back to his high school in Ipswich, just outside Brisbane, where his classmates are already planning on welcoming him back home with a hero’s welcome.
Don’t miss all the excitement coming up in Gout’s bright new future! He will not have to race against his closest competitor Kennedy again as Kennedy was disqualified for a false start in the 200 meters final.
