BrightDrop Faces Layoffs and Plant Idling Amid Declining Demand for Electric Vans

General Motors (GM) has announced the layoff of 500 workers at its CAMI plant in Ontario, Canada, due to weak demand for BrightDrop’s all-electric vans. The company’s efforts come amid ongoing challenges for its troubled electric vehicle subsidiary. This eponymous subsidiary was established as a distinct division inside of GM in 2021 before entering the Chevy family in 2023.

BrightDrop focuses on producing all-electric delivery vans. The company has recently faced significant troubles, like a 2024 recall of all its vans. This recall was triggered by enough combustion events, or battery fire incidents, that caused consumers and regulators to question the safety of the product. Consequently, the need for BrightDrop’s vans has disappeared, leading GM to make cuts so severe it plans to…

The layoffs will hit mostly workers at the CAMI plant, where production is about to be slashed by half. As part of the move, BrightDrop will cut one of the facility’s two shifts. Beginning in May, the plant will be idled for 20 weeks. This decision only serves as the most recent symbol of the company’s fight to keep production lines open as sales tumble and operational challenges continue to mount.

From the very beginning, BrightDrop has tried to differentiate itself in a crowded EV landscape. After recent fires related to battery safety combined with the subsequent recall, consumer confidence is returning rapidly. BrightDrop’s all-electric delivery vans seemed like the future at the time. The company today is confronted by a challenging environment characterized by a dramatic drop in demand.

The reality at CAMI plant is what’s being played out throughout the auto industry. Manufacturers are all-in on electric vehicles. Manufacturers are making real, substantial moves to put EVs front and center. As GM continues to support BrightDrop, it remains to be seen how the company will adapt its strategy to regain traction in the market.
