OpenAI Introduces ID Verification for Access to Advanced AI Models

OpenAI recently released a roadmap for an upcoming verification system. Before long, companies might have to provide an ID from a government to use some of the more powerful future iterations of these AI models. This latest action furthers the company’s stated goal to identify and mitigate the negative usage of its algorithms. In doing so, they fulfill their commitment to keeping AI accessible and using it in a safe manner.

Last month, OpenAI released three reports outlining its plans to prevent misuse of its technology. The company has acted boldly to enforce this principle, including by blocking access to its services in China since last summer. This step is a confirmation of its move to protect the integrity of its API. The decision followed an investigation regarding a group associated with DeepSeek, a China-based AI lab, which allegedly exfiltrated substantial amounts of data through OpenAI’s API in late 2024.

OpenAI’s new verification system, known as Verified Organization, serves as a mechanism for developers to unlock access to the platform’s most advanced models and capabilities. This status improves security and helps developers make sure their code works with future model releases. Verification is an easy step that should take only a couple of minutes to go through. Note that the ID can only confirm one organization every 90-day period. Plus, many of the organizations will be ineligible or fail to meet the criteria for verification.

The need to provide a valid government-issued ID is part of OpenAI’s efforts to enforce its use case policy. The fact is, a very small minority of developers has been found to flat-out try to game these policies, meaning harsher penalties are necessary.

First, OpenAI’s API is still only open to a limited list of countries. To be verified, organizations need to have an ID number issued by one of these authorized entities. These proactive measures are a testament to OpenAI’s commitment to the safe and responsible use of advanced artificial intelligence technologies.

“At OpenAI, we take our responsibility seriously to ensure that AI is both broadly accessible and used safely,” – OpenAI spokesperson.
