Rory McIlroy emerged victorious in what would become his first Masters title, winning an exhilarating common birdie on the first hole of sudden-death playoff. McIlroy’s victory was most emotional indeed, as he had been chasing his first major championship since August 2014. Having suffered a decadal stretch of close calls, this victory was all the more significant. Tension escalated on the course as the stormy event continued. McIlroy had a solid looking four-shot lead at one stage, but a shock last-day collapse almost derailed his bid for a historic third title.

As McIlroy made his way around the course, it truly seemed like he was in total control… until he got to the back nine. A combination of bad blunders by incumbents opened the door for challengers, resulting in a fiery environment. Although he experienced harrowing obstacles, he never recoiled. Late in the campaign, he released two of the finest shots of his professional life, breathing new life into his flagging hopes.
