Jorge Martin, the defending champ, suffered serious injury in a crash during the Qatar Grand Prix on Sunday. The race was held at Lusail International Circuit. As the crash occurred on turn 11, it was right in front of the media, under the lights. This was an especially brutal return for Martin, who had already missed the first three rounds of the season with prior injuries.
After the horrific crash, Martin had to battle tooth and claw to come back. He was quickly airlifted to the nearest center of orthopedic excellence for further assessment and treatment. A post mortem examination showed he had made at least six breaks on his right-hand back arches from one to six. Moreover, hospital staff had treated him for a pneumothorax, a serious medical condition that involves constant monitoring.
Medical Assessment and Hospital Stay
Martin’s team, Aprilia Racing, later confirmed the severity of his condition. They stated, “Jorge Martin underwent a CT scan that showed an increase in the pneumothorax, this will make it necessary to place a drainage in aspiration.” This invasive procedure is intended to relieve pressure in the chest cavity due to a build-up of air.
The team further elaborated on Martin’s situation. “The rider will have to remain under observation for a few days in the hospital until the pneumothorax resolves.” His hospital recovery is very important, this way he gets the best care and monitoring possible at this pivotal time in his need for recovery.
At present, Aprilia have yet to offer any sort of timeline for Martin’s return to action. That’s a wrap on the first half of the championship, with the next round starting in just two weeks at the Spanish Grand Prix. Even his participation is in question.
A Difficult Comeback
Martin’s crash is particularly unfortunate, having just seen his efforts to return to competition thwarted by multiple injuries and a frustrating start this season. Having crashed during pre-season testing, he sat out the first three rounds of the season. The injury resulted in breaks to his foot and his hand. This newest blow only adds to his mounting frustration as he tries to get back on track for any hope of a title run.
Martin has support Massimo Rivola, Aprilia’s racing director, sent Martin and his family strength at this challenging time. “Performance moves to the back burner today and our thoughts are with Jorge at this difficult period. We stand with him,” he remarked. The team’s focus shifted from winning now to making sure that Martin was physically and mentally healthy and on the long road to recovery.
