Delhi Capitals suffered their first loss of the ongoing Indian Premier League season. They were defeated by Mumbai Indians in a close match, by 12 runs. The inaugural match was held at the Arun Jaitley Stadium. Mumbai’s breathtaking back-to-the-wall victory brought their playoff hopes alive and went a long way in drastically improving their position in the season standings.
Mumbai Indians moved to seventh place after registering their second victory in six games. The team put up an excellent score of 205 for five wickets. Tilak Varma was the top scorer with his quick-fire half-century which built a perfect base for their explosive score. Though Rohit Sharma continued to struggle as he has throughout this World Cup, the collective effort of the team was paramount to a much-needed win.

Batting first, the Mumbai Indians posted their second 200-plus total of the season, thanks to their array of star players. Varma’s explosive batting contributed significantly to the team’s total, allowing them to set a challenging target for Delhi Capitals. Delhi Capitals couldn’t have asked for a worse start to their chase, losing their opener Jake Fraser-McGurk on the very first ball of the innings. A counter-attacking rearguard partnership between Karun Nair and Abishek Porel offered brief respite and hope. The pair were phenomenal too, as the duo formed a fantastic second wicket 119-run partnership. A remarkable performance put the Delhi Capitals in a fury mood as they aimed for a difficult target set by Mumbai.
As the innings progressed, Naman Dhir’s quickfire 38 not out further boosted Delhi’s chances. With three wickets remaining, they needed just 23 runs from the last two overs, creating an exhilarating finish to the match.
