After such a challenging Bahrain Grand Prix, this was the perfect tonic for Lando Norris. A positive five-second penalty ended up costing him dearly on his final result. Norris had a great start from P3. Upon being hit with a penalty, he had trouble keeping pace and dropped as low as 14th. There was a small problem—his car wasn’t entirely parked within the grid box. This error ended up costing him a time penalty and negated a majority of his impressive efforts throughout the race.
Norris came into the weekend only a single point above Max Verstappen. He was aware of the pressure that was put upon him. Adding some spice to the competition, reigning four-time world champion Verstappen was right on Norris’s tail. This pressure increased Norris’s demand for a standout race to lock himself into the playoff standings. As the race went on, it became evident that Norris’s errors would cut his pursuit short.
A Messy Race for Norris
In reflecting on the race, Norris took responsibility for a chain of mistakes that plagued his day. He confessed, “I had too many mistakes, with the overtakes, at the start when I was out of position… It was a bad race for me, a messy race.” His admission goes on to underline the challenges he found in finding his way around the track and making successful overtakes.
Even given these circumstances, Norris cut further into the field’s lead while running in 14th. On that note, I’m a little bit happier today that I was able to return to P3. I felt pretty well set up, all that jazz. For all those reasons, I think P2 was the best we could have done today. So we must have reached it,” he added. This line highlights his deep conviction in his own greatness in spite of the failures.
Norris’s success played a huge role in his own eventual high placements. It provided Oscar Piastri the opportunity to leapfrog him in the championship standings. Former championship leader Norris now enjoys a narrow lead himself, sitting three points clear of Piastri. Piastri qualified on pole and has now locked up the second spot in the championship.
Championship Battle Intensifies
The competitive landscape of the championship has changed drastically after this race. And with Norris requiring to do a better job than Verstappen in order to guarantee himself a seat, the pressure has never been more intense. With the two held so evenly in tandem, either driver’s error would result in severe ramifications for their championship position.
Though Norris’s struggles have been difficult to miss, he has not lost confidence in himself. “I can’t be thinking ‘Oh man, I have no confidence in that.’” … “I already know that, that I’m good enough, and all of those things,” he continued. He admitted, “something’s not connecting for me and the car.” This demonstrates he understands what he should be doing even as he struggles to do it while adjusting to his new vehicle’s dynamics.
With the rest of the season ahead, it’s high time Norris focused on improving his execution and minimizing errors. Accomplishing that will be key to him staying ahead of Piastri and resisting Verstappen’s pursuit. Those next few races will be key in deciding if he can get back some of that fire and some of that fight to compete for the title.
