Phuket Faces Flash Floods Amid Heavy Rainfall and Weather Warnings

Phuket is dealing with the aftermath of a day of intense storms that caused severe flash flooding within hours. The Thai Meteorological Department has issued severe weather alerts for the surrounding region. Prepare for prolonged and repeated torrential downpours and a severe threat of flash flooding through at least April 22. The worsening has forced officials to issue preemptive emergency notices throughout southern Thailand, especially for people living near flood-prone zones.

The intense localized downpours have been observed due to the combined effect of westerly winds and south-easterly winds, which is present over Andaman Sea. This anomalous weather pattern has dealt a catastrophic blow to Phuket and surrounding areas. Either way, it has wreaked havoc on the Gulf of Thailand and southern Thailand as a whole. Consequently, many districts across Phuket were hit by flash floods on Wednesday morning, causing major damage.

Indefensible governments, be careful! They particularly cautioned people who reside close to the Nak Kerd Mountain Range in Tambon Karon due to the increased threat of landslides. In fact, based on historical data, this same type of weather pattern has caused deadly landslides in this area before. This terrifies state residents, and it terrifies state officials.

In Mueang District, flooding has inundated roads at Tha Kraeng intersection, rendering them impassable by small vehicles. This situation is making transportation, especially outdoor projects in the region, even more difficult. Countywide, local emergency services are responding to ongoing incidents and continuing to assess damage, all while working to protect and support their affected residents.

The Thai Meteorological Department is following the situation with special observation. They encourage all residents to remain vigilant as more localized heavy rain is forecast through today. These impacts are reflected in our current weather alerts plastered across the state, a reminder of the ever-present dangers natural phenomena can have on lives here.
