Anthropic, the potential competitor to Microsoft’s OpenAI backed by billions from Google, is intensifying its partnership with Amazon Web Services (AWS). The company is creating a special team to lure AWS customers over to its AI products. Anthropic is taking a savvy step to encourage the adoption of its Claude family of AI models. They are using their existing relationship with AWS to ensure that this happens.
The collaboration between Anthropic and Amazon has been central to the rapid development of Anthropic’s Claude AI models. The biggest backer of the startup—Amazon—has opened up its wallet to the tune of $8 billion thus far. Beyond that, it provides homegrown chips, which are critical to supercharging models in-house. Anthropic’s Claude models are already utilized by tens of thousands of Bedrock customers, showcasing the ongoing integration of their AI technology within AWS’s infrastructure.
In 2023, Anthropic plans to bring in $2.2 billion in revenue. They’ve given themselves an aggressive timeline to get there—$12 billion in annual revenues by 2027. The formation of this new team is another signal of Anthropic’s commitment to expanding its footprint across the AI ecosystem. Most importantly, it seeks to directly reach AWS users. The newly formed combative squad will demonstrate alternative abilities that Anthropic’s unique models are capable of. These models have been optimized to run efficiently on AWS.
The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) has recently sent letters to Amazon, Microsoft, and Google, requesting explanations regarding the impacts of their investments in startups like Anthropic. The UK’s Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) recently investigated Amazon’s investment in Anthropic. We certainly respect their conclusion that the deal does not trigger existing merger laws, therefore no investigation is warranted.
“You will own and scale one of our most significant strategic relationships, leading a team responsible for multi-billion dollar revenue opportunities through our AWS partnership.” This quote reveals just how high the stakes are when it comes to building a fruitful partnership between these two companies.
Amazon CEO Andy Jassy highlighted the significance of this collaboration, referring to it as a “multi-billion-dollar annual revenue run rate,” underlining the potential financial impact of Anthropic’s products integrated within AWS.
Internationally, competition in the AI sector has accelerated. Anthropic now needs to cement its place in the industry’s foundations, and can do so thanks in part to deepening ties with industry-leaders such as Amazon.
