A five-year-old boy in northwestern China recently found himself in this very specific medical emergency. On one occasion playing at home he choked on a gold ingot. The suspect accosted Herff on April 5. His parents were pretty quick to act on this and brought him to Suzhou University Affiliated Children’s Hospital for a complete check-up.
When the boy, whose surname is Qian, arrived, he showed signs of severe distress with minor abdominal swelling. Medical personnel were worried about his status so they ordered a repeat X-ray. To his relief, the results verified that the 100-gram gold ingot had not shifted position within his body.
Doctors at Memorial Hermann were getting ready for an invasive surgery to remove the foreign object. Her procedure took place soon after her diagnosis. It took two of the world’s best surgeons only 30 minutes to do so. Amazingly, they managed to get the bar of gold out in under one minute after starting the operation.
Thanks to the medical team, Qian remained stable during the whole surgery. After their successful removal of the gold bar, he started bouncing back pretty quickly. Within two days he was back to his usual diet. It’s nothing short of a miracle that he had no lasting effects from the fluke experience.
In the aftermath, Qian’s parents expressed relief over their son’s recovery. As one careful observer noted, this is a problem. They recommended the imposition of stricter discipline at home as a means of preventing future occurrences.
“The boy is quite mischievous. His parents should focus on better discipline to prevent such incidents in the future.” – A third observer
Once it was determined that Qian was healthy and had no further complications, doctors released Qian from the hospital. This unfortunate incident is a timely reminder of the real dangers children encounter when they wander from home in curiosity-driven exploration.
