Darren Hayes, former lead singer of the popular Australian duo Savage Garden, revealed that he “could have died” following a serious health incident last month. On March 17, Hayes passed out and fell down three times in Santa Monica, California. This severely traumatizing incident left him with many severe injuries.
The trauma from the collapse resulted in violent blunt force injury. It crushed his left mandible in two places and blew out nine of his teeth. Hayes described the terrifying moment when he regained consciousness: he awoke in a pool of blood and felt “terrible pain” on the left side of his head. Shortly after the incident, she was able to get him immediate emergency reconstructive surgery. Today, his jaw is still wired shut as he grinds on his recovery.
Hayes, pictured above, had been suffering from dizziness and episodes of fainting. Doctors continue to search for the underlying cause of his ailments. In a statement, he noted, “They scanned for and ruled out heart issues and anything neurological.” He added, “So far my heart is normal, my arteries are normal and I don’t have a brain tumour or anything that could cause the accident.”
Though the crash was horrific, Hayes is now living an alcohol- and drug-free life. These decisions allow him to sidestep ingredients that would otherwise cause him to suffer serious health emergencies. The artist’s experience is a wake-up call that health emergencies can strike at any time, without notice.
On April 18, Hayes posted an Instagram selfie. In the candid photo, he showed off his dislocated jaw and told fans what the latest was on his recovery. His positivity and drive to rebound shine through as he deals with this difficult situation.

Savage Garden are perhaps best known for their two consecutive American chart-topping hits, “Truly Madly Deeply” and “I Knew I Loved You.” The duo was cemented by Hayes and his musical soulmate, the prodigy Daniel Jones. By the late ‘90s, the pair had vaulted themselves to worldwide superstardom. Their music still touches fans around the world today.
