Bluesky, a federated social network alternative to Twitter, experienced a massive outage on Thursday evening, completely wiping access to the service for many of its users. The outage, which began around 6:55 PM ET, rendered the app unusable on both web and mobile platforms for approximately one hour. The Blacksky team, responsible for maintaining the platform’s infrastructure, is currently working on enhancing online safety through Bluesky’s decentralized tools.
Like many decentralized social media platforms, Bluesky is home to many different communities, where some might prioritize radically different infrastructure or moderation services. These communities are able to build their own client applications, fostering innovative and engaging user experiences across a myriad of distinct environments. Bluesky’s opaque ecosystem The second layer of Bluesky’s architecture rests on an even smaller group of people. They govern its different parts, like Personal Data Stores (PDS) and relays.
The first status message regarding the outage was posted shortly after the issue was identified, with a follow-up message at 7:38 PM ET indicating that a fix was being implemented. Even though the duration of the disruption was short, the fallout led to notable responses by members of the user community.
