Meta’s Threads Makes Official Move to Threads.com with Web App Updates

Meta has officially moved its new social app, Threads, from the original Threads.net domain to a newly purchased Threads.com. In September 2024, we took a big step that would further increase user accessibility. This single change makes the world a much more pleasant place to ride on our platform.

So when Meta released Threads in July 2023, it took advantage of the URL Threads.net. As of October 2023, a startup invested in by Sequoia Capital controlled the Threads.com domain. This vibrant startup provided a new, exciting option to Slack and other popular collaboration platforms. One year later, the startup sold the domain to Shopify.com. That settlement laid the groundwork for Meta’s buyout.

Meta’s decision to move Threads over to Threads.com should be considered a positive step towards user usability. Going forward, anyone who goes to Threads.com will automatically be sent to Threads.net. Rather, it’s users entering Threads.net who will be sent to the just created Threads.com. We anticipate this transition will improve user engagement by allowing users direct access to the social application.

Instagram head Adam Mosseri has begun messaging users that big changes will be coming with the release of the web app, currently available in beta at Threads.com. The web app has recently become the most popular tool for creators which they use to share the content and engage with their audience. All of these updates are expected to make the platform even more user-friendly and functional.

Meta has also signaled that users should expect some changes in URL redirection during this transition. Per the company, moving Threads to a dedicated domain will help improve navigation. Beyond that, it will further carve out Threads’ identity in the evolving social media landscape.
