Uganda’s half-marathon world record holder Jacob Kiplimo is preparing for his much-anticipated full marathon debut. He’ll toe the line at the world-famous London Marathon this Sunday. Kiplimo first found his way into the headlines this year by demolishing the half-marathon record in Barcelona, breaking it by 48 seconds. These days, he’s ready to prove his gift on a bigger national platform.
The London Marathon, renowned for its competitive field and vibrant atmosphere, will see over 56,000 runners compete, potentially breaking the world record for the most participants. Kiplimo’s marathon debut has been much awaited, as he looks to prove his ability in the longer distance event.
Kiplimo’s Record-Breaking Journey
Earlier this year, Kiplimo made history by setting a new half-marathon world record in Barcelona, clocking an astounding time that left many in awe. His incredible success paved the way for him to become one of the most iconic names in all of long-distance running.
I got courage from winning last year’s marathon so I said I would keep on coming here, to try my best again,” stated Alexander Mutiso Munyao, Kenya’s defending men’s champion, who will compete in London for the second time. Kiplimo hopes to induce that same bravery as he moves up to the full marathon distance.
Kiplimo will be focused on running to his full potential. He’s still very much a man looking to the race future, eager to take part in the new challenge.
The Return of Marathon Greats
Eliud Kipchoge, the legendary marathoner and current world record holder, is in London on a comeback tour. This will be his first trip back since 2020! With four London Marathon victories on his resume, the addition of Kipchoge to the field creates instant and historic excitement. At 40 years of age, he’s no less a competitive force.
Kipchoge has said that he’d like to give back through this race. “I am coming here to support London’s good causes,” he said. He emphasized the importance of charity events associated with the London Marathon, stating, “It is about the charity events being done by London Marathon, that is why I am here.”
“As an experienced marathon racer, Kipchoge knows first-hand how unpredictable a competitive race can be. “We have no idea what he will do on the day,” he remarked, referring to Kiplimo’s debut. It’s impossible to predict the future. Whether he can become the first athlete to ever complete a marathon in under two hours, he continued, “is undoubtedly true! But it could be. “We’ll find out on Sunday.”
Strong Competitors Expected
In addition to Kipchoge and Kiplimo, Ethiopia’s Olympic champion Tamirat Tola will compete in this year’s marathon. With the top elite athletes, this guarantees a fiercely competitive atmosphere.
Chief Executive Officer of Ndakaini Dam Alexander Mutiso Munyao is looking forward to an “Epic” day with a competitive field of runners expected. This mix of veteran marathoners and bright new stars such as Kiplimo is sure to set the stage for a thrilling race environment.
So as race day approaches, all eyes will be focused on Kiplimo. He is on the cusp of undertaking a marathon trip that will reshape his life and career and raise his profile as one of the top athletes in the world.
