DoorDash is currently on the receiving end of a suit that Uber filed in February, as the war of words heats up between the two food delivery monopolies. This legal tussle comes at a time when DoorDash is landing headlines of its own. The company recently announced its staggering acquisition of Deliveroo for $3.6 billion. A full hearing on the merits of the lawsuit is set for July 11 in California Superior Court, San Francisco County.
Uber’s lawsuit, which is spearheaded by Uber’s Advanced Technologies Group, claims that DoorDash has participated in various unfair competitive practices. As such, DoorDash has denied the allegations completely. They describe them as a “cynical and calculated scare tactic” from a competitor foundering on the rocks of a changing market. DoorDash has argued that its business model is based on competition and innovation.
DoorDash stated, “the lawsuit is nothing more than a cynical and calculated scare tactic from a frustrated competitor seeking to avoid real competition. It’s disappointing behavior from a company once known for competing on the merits of its products and innovation.”
The legal battle comes at a time when DoorDash is trying to solidify its leading position in the market amid the proposed US$ 8 billion acquisition of Deliveroo. This strategy is one way it can build upon its service portfolio and cement its place in the cutthroat food delivery space.
In stark opposition, Uber wants you to believe through its lawsuit that it’s taking the lead on protecting merchants’ interests. According to the company, what DoorDash does with its practices is foster a marketplace where restaurants have to decide between accepting these unfair terms or dealing with retaliation. We couldn’t agree more with Uber – that’s exactly why this type of deal erodes real competition.
“When restaurants are forced to choose between unfair terms or retaliation, that’s not competition — it’s coercion. Uber will continue to stand up for merchants and for a level playing field. We look forward to presenting the facts in court.” – Uber
DoorDash has defended its position, asserting that it “competes fiercely yet fairly to deliver exceptional value to merchants.” Through transparency and best practices, DoorDash says it is working to encourage a competitive marketplace where consumers benefit from choices.
As the July hearing approaches, both companies are preparing now to make their arguments in front of the court. This legal battle will have huge repercussions on the food delivery industry. It is going to influence the competitive landscape that’s going to emerge in the future.
