Al Ahly SC has officially relieved head coach Marcel Koller of his duties, the club announced on Saturday. The 64-year-old Swiss coach was in his second stint as the Pharaohs’ head coach having returned in March 2022. Under his unique leadership Al Ahly won historic feats, like winning two CAF Champions League titles. After a recent exit from the Champions League semifinal, domestic and international scrutiny turned on, forcing his hand, and ultimately leading to his dismissal.
Koller’s first days were filled with promise after his success with the likes of FC Basel and FC Köln. As a result of his successful coaching reputation, enthusiasm swelled amongst Al Ahly supporters. They wanted him to continue the club’s legacy of success in African football. In his one-and-a-half year stint with Al Ahly, in 2023, Koller managed to win multiple trophies with the club, further solidifying his mark on the club.
Champions League Disappointment
Though he had experienced success in the past, none loomed larger over Koller than 2023’s record-breaking CAF Champions League run. Title holders Al Ahly were eliminated in the semifinal stage by Mamelodi Sundowns, a disappointing end to an otherwise strong title defense. The team came out scrappy in Cairo, managing to hold the second leg to a 1-1 draw. This came in contrast to the much less exciting scoreless battle in Pretoria.
The club’s exit surprised all, especially as Al Ahly was the defending champion. The team would go out on away goals in a cruel twist of fate. This surprising choice raised immediate questions about their play in key games leading up to this point.
Club’s Statement on Departure
Following the controversial resignation, Al Ahly issued a statement explaining Koller’s resignation. The club understood the unusual situation in which they found themselves making a decision and thanked Koller for his service.
“Due to the emergency circumstances and in light of the distinguished relationship that has been reflected in numerous previous positions, the club is currently negotiating with the coach to terminate the contract by mutual consent in a manner befitting the club and its coach” – Al Ahly club statement.
That quote speaks to the gratitude that Koller’s work is already inspiring, as well as the need to look ahead after a disappointing summer.

It is a great club that wants to continue on the back of its wonderful history and reclaim their status as one of Africa’s top clubs.
