X has made other attempts to improve its platform, including a major upgrade that will let some creators upload videos in 4K resolution. This new feature follows the launch of a dedicated feed for vertical videos earlier this year, aiming to enhance user experience and capitalize on the current uncertainty surrounding TikTok’s potential ban in the United States.
X is rolling out 4K video uploads in order to increase creator engagement. This step is designed to keep users from migrating to other platforms such as YouTube or Vimeo for premium video content. Until now, X permitted its paying subscribers to upload videos, but only in up to 1080p resolution. These uploads could be anywhere from 8GB and up, and average around three hours in length. Then in December 2022, the platform rolled out to Twitter Blue users the ability to upload longer videos—bumping the limit up to 60 minutes. As of May 2023, that limit had risen to a remarkable two hours.
In particular, X has lowered the barrier for creating vertical video content. It has gone further by directly embedding a short-form video shortcut on the front page of its mobile applications. This seamless side effect convinces users to browse and distribute video content natively on the platform’s app. It’s consistent with X’s broader game plan to lure users to tweet more often, an effort that’s ramped up significantly since Elon Musk took control of the company.
