Bob Baffert Makes Controversial Return to Kentucky Derby After Ban

In addition, this marks the return of Bob Baffert, one of the most successful trainers in horse racing history, after a 3-year suspension from Churchill Downs. His absence this time was due to a scandal —a #MeToo moment of sorts. Medina Spirit, his charge, had just tested positive for a performance-enhancing drug after winning the 2021 Derby. At first a two year ban was established. Instead, it was extended through the end of 2024. After Baffert in July acknowledged culpability for the positive test result, the ban was lifted. Now, he’s about to take part in the 151st running of that prestigious race with his horse Citizen Bull.

Baffert’s return has stirred mixed reactions. He has an astounding 17 victories in the Triple Crown series. Animal rights groups were right to sound alarm bells over his cruel and dangerous training methods. PETA, the world’s largest and most effective animal protection organization, has been at the forefront of public outcry and condemnation. They are outraged by the deaths of two horses in Baffert’s care just months before the Derby.

Controversy Surrounding Baffert

The process that ultimately led to Baffert’s ban started soon after Medina Spirit’s victory in 2021. In the wake of the drug test failure, Churchill Downs issued a suspension that would have barred him from running at the track until 2024. Once Baffert accepted responsibility, officials reversed the ban earlier this year. Even with his reinstatement, animal rights advocates continue to criticize Wright.

Kathy Guillermo, Senior Vice President for PETA, underscored her opposition to Baffert’s way of doing business. She stated, “Bob Baffert’s two dead horses only a month before the Kentucky Derby should be a red flag for Churchill Downs.” Guillermo further commented on the track’s reputation, saying, “In addition, the track must account for its own appalling record as dead horses are turning it into a graveyard.”

All of this drama aside, Baffert rolled into Louisville after winning three straight races with different horses. His humble and self-aware demeanor shined through when he recognized the red carpet welcome given him upon returning to Churchill Downs last November. I moved here in November and it was lovely, arriving through the stable gate everybody was cordial to me, welcoming me back, and so it’s like I never left. I feel great,” he remarked.

Citizen Bull’s Prospects

Citizen Bull will be trained by Baffert at the Derby and has drawn the rail post position. Citizen Bull is currently the 20-1 morning line odds at this writing. Against all odds—human and equine—Baffert is confident as ever about his horse taking the crown. When you have a horse like him, he just really gives you a lot of confidence. “Wouldn’t have made any difference where he was drawn,” said Michael McCarthy, the other trainer.

Not all news is positive. Rare misstep Baffert had to scratch another horse, Rodriguez, late Thursday after he developed a plantar foot bruise. This decision is unfortunate as he heads into what is perhaps the most important time in horse racing.

The Road Ahead

With a week to go before the Kentucky Derby, this is what Baffert said when asked about the feelings that come with such an extraordinary day. “When I get the emotions is the day of the derby,” he noted. With his return marked by both triumph and controversy, all eyes will be on Baffert and Citizen Bull as they enter the starting gates at 6:57 p.m. ET.
