Google will be presenting its latest design system, Material 3 Expressive, at the end of this month. The announcement will happen at its annual developer conference, WWDC. This new design language makes adventurous use of shape and color. Its objective is to improve usage experiences through Android apps.
Material 3 Expressive is an evolution of Google’s original Material Design system, first released in 2014. This comprehensive design framework offers detailed guidelines to help you build beautiful, intuitive, and friendly user interfaces across your Android applications. It has changed a lot since its original passage. That last one, “Material You,” or Material 3 as it’s colloquially referred to, was the biggest change preceding this new revelation. Initially launched in May 2021, it broke new ground with an adaptive, contextual interface that empowers users to fully customize their Android experience.
The newest update, Material 3 Expressive is all about crafting joyful user experiences. Beyond that, it achieves this through its punk aesthetics. Instead, Google emphasizes that we should not consider expressive design a “silver bullet.” Moreover, app developers need to adhere to well-established design patterns and industry standards. Meanwhile, they’ve had an opportunity to shape their applications to take advantage of this new system.
New user experience research done at Google points to a large desire on the part of users for delightfully expressive design, as long as it doesn’t compromise usability. Material 3 Expressive is particularly crafted to improve accessibility for older adults. Even small improvements in voice performance can make a big difference in their ability to interact with apps.
The early underpinnings of Material 3 Expressive were inadvertently leaked in a now-pulled blog post by Google on Flutter 3.3.9to5Google was first to report on this post. Thanks to the Wayback Machine, what Google was attempting to hide on the Internet remains available for public view.
The session will likely explore how this updated design system can help developers create more emotionally engaging connections with users.
