Patreon Expands Payment Options in Latest App Update

Speaking of Patreon, they recently released a new version of their iOS app! The app recently made the leap from version 125.4.1 to 125.5.0, introducing new main features to guide user payment methods. As a result of this update, users feel more confident making purchases on the web. Now, they have even more ways to support their favorite creators! Other new features added to the app are payment with credit cards, Venmo, PayPal, and Apple Pay.

Previously, users were restricted to using Apple’s in-app purchase system for subscribing to creators’ membership plans. A consequential court ruling in the U.S. has just opened the door wide for Patreon and other app developers. Now, they can connect to other payment options directly from their applications. This administrative shift now allows developers to charge players a commission on third-party payment platforms. It’s a historic move towards changing the speed of transactions and how they can be used.

Apple even gave Patreon a deadline to move all of its creators onto Apple’s iOS in-app purchase system. They need to implement this change by November 2025. To not comply would have meant that Patreon was removed from the App Store entirely. Though the recent court ruling opened the door to more flexible payment options, Patreon has remained hopeful that it would be able to navigate these requirements.

“This is still a developing situation, but we are moving forward under the assumption that the November 2025 deadline for all Patreon creators to switch to subscription billing is no longer necessary.” – Patreon

In the past few days, the new diverse checkout experience has started rolling out, so users who upgrade the app should see this in the next 24 hours. In addition to making this feature more user-friendly, this is a natural extension of Patreon’s long-standing commitment to help creators succeed on their own.

“While additional information may come that alters Apple’s requirements for Patreon’s iOS app, we are optimistic that this ruling will give us additional flexibility in how we support creators on legacy billing models. However, for now, creators still need to be on subscription billing to be able to accept payments through the Patreon iOS app.” – Patreon

Patreon announced these changes through an artist support document and a message on its Discord server. This method helps to ensure that creators are never caught off guard by the changes. This proactive approach speaks to Patreon’s effort to stay open and transparent with their community while helping everyone through this transition.

The availability of these new payment methods extends even beyond musicians, and is an important development in how we think about Patreon as a general service. Patreon increases its usefulness by giving patrons more options in how they choose to support artists financially. That’s a win-win for creators and subscribers alike.
