Breathe Battery Technologies Secures $21 Million Series B to Revolutionize Battery Performance

Breathe Battery Technologies, a pioneering firm in battery performance prediction, has successfully raised $21 million in a Series B funding round led by Kinnevik Online AB. This investment will propel the company’s efforts to enhance its suite of software tools, which are designed to aid automakers and electronics manufacturers in optimizing battery design and performance.

Founded by Ian Campbell, who serves as the co-founder and CEO, Breathe Battery Technologies offers four innovative products: Charge, Design, Model, and Map. Together, each of these tools take on some of the important aspects of battery technology. This allows customers to better predict and optimize battery performance over time. The company operates an innovation lab out of London. There, it tests thousands of batteries that potential clients are interested in using.

Breathe Battery Technologies has recently released its first product, Charge. This unique approach ensures the best charging strategy is adopted to either reduce the refilling time or extend battery life. This software solution has been wildly successful so far. Chinese mobile phone maker Oppo was the first to adopt it. Thanks in part to utilizing the Charge software, Oppo was able to increase its overall energy use efficiency by an astounding 27%.

The company’s Model product extends those capabilities even deeper into the energy industry by simulating what batteries could do in the future. This software to smartly engage customers can be delivered to consumers in as little as four weeks. It provides real time perspectives into their alternative pack designs. Within the next few months Breathe Battery Technologies will introduce our Design product. This groundbreaking design tool will help customers bring new battery chemistries to market faster and more efficiently.

At Breathe Battery Technologies, our mission is to help our clients succeed in a rapidly changing electric vehicle (EV) world. Typically, automakers require over four years to go from sketchpad to showroom. In fast-moving markets such as China, new models can be brought to market in as few as 18 months. The firm’s more effective and efficient software tools help firms collaborate more closely with foundries helping them apply their designs to reality.

“No two cells that roll off the line are 100% identical, which poses a challenge that we address with our software solutions,” said Ian Campbell. The products provided by Breathe Battery Technologies help customers identify where to allocate development resources, guiding them through complex trade-offs during the battery system development program.

Campbell emphasized the focus on improving cost and time in a more urgent way. This demand is accelerated by the more competitive and expedited development cycles seen in markets such as China. “With the increasingly short development cycles in China, it’s driving a huge amount of cost and time focus,” he stated.

Campbell was very specific about the company’s commitment to their products. That’s the model he wants to duplicate with all of the success we’ve had in semiconductor design. “We want to try and do for batteries what we’ve seen the simulation software from Cadence and Synopsis do so effectively in semiconductor design,” he remarked.

Through its innovative products and strategic funding, Breathe Battery Technologies is well-positioned to support its clients in designing batteries that meet future demands. The company’s primary focus is on creating better-performing batteries. This commitment, if followed through on, will benefit the world’s auto industry and electronics manufacturers alike.
