Fidji Simo, the current CEO of Instacart, will be starting at OpenAI as the new CEO of the Applications group. This transition is an important move for Simo. She has only furthered that reputation with a deep background in product management and monetization. She plans to formally step down from her position at Instacart over the next few months. She’ll remain as chair of Instacart’s board.
Simo has already had an impact on the tech industry. As a senior leader at Instacart, she’s successfully guided the Silicon Valley unicorn through several stages of hyper-growth. She is a great operational lead in product development and leading revenue streams. This background sets her up as a terrific choice to head up OpenAI’s Applications division. Simo isn’t new blood to the company, though—she’s already well acquainted with OpenAI’s ways, having served on its board over the last year.
OpenAI’s Applications group is responsible for ensuring that the organization’s research effectively reaches and benefits the global community. OpenAI CEO Sam Altman showed confidence in Simo through a statement shared with TechCrunch. He continued, “Applications unites an inspiring mix of business and operating talent focused on how our research gets into and improves the world. Fidji is uniquely qualified to lead that charge.” Fidji has served as an OpenAI board member for the last year. In these years, he’s accomplished so much for our firm including improving our company culture.
Simo will start her full-time role at OpenAI later this year and will report to Altman directly. Her dedication to the role gives a strong indication that she is deeply invested in furthering the organization’s mission.
“Joining OpenAI at this critical moment is an incredible privilege and responsibility. This organization has the potential of accelerating human potential at a pace never seen before and I am deeply committed to shaping these applications toward the public good,” – Fidji Simo
As Simo looks ahead to this new chapter, she will continue to guide Instacart’s path as chair of its board. Her remarkable capacity to inhabit both roles highlights her passion for advancing innovation and positive social impact through technology.
Simo’s transition to new executive leadership comes at a pivotal time for both organizations. OpenAI continues to expand its reach within artificial intelligence, while Instacart seeks to strengthen its market presence amid increasing competition. Simo and OpenAI are joining forces to change how AI applications are developed and applied. Their intention is to ensure that these technologies are aligned with humanity’s best interests.
