Readiness of the World Junior Champion in doubt for next week’s Thailand Open in Bangkok as injury concerns haunt him. The Malaysian badminton champion is set to open her campaign against world No 18 Angus Ng Ka Long of Hong Kong in the opening round. A hand injury sustained during last week’s Sudirman Cup tie against Sri Lanka in Xiamen may see him miss out.
AA national singles coaching director Kenneth Jonassen is at work to get Leong Jun Hao back to full fitness. The ultimate determination about his participation will be based on a forthcoming medical evaluation report. He remains on the tournament’s entry list for the time being. He is considering withdrawing if things don’t get better.
Her injury has sent shockwaves across the national badminton camp, leading them to exercise measures in order to prevent any exacerbation of her condition. Whether Leong Jun Hao can play in four major tournaments will be contingent on his immediate health. After these local tournaments, it will be the Malaysian Masters (May 20-25), Singapore Open (May 27-June 1), and Indonesian Open (June 3-8).
Jonassen noted that it’s essential to solicit the right kind of feedback during training sessions, prior to implementing anything on a larger scale.
“We’re starting next week with Thailand Open, then of course Malaysian Masters, and then Singapore and Indonesia. So, we have to be strategical and get the right amount of feedback before making a final decision.” – Kenneth Jonassen
Jonassen was forced to battle because of his troublesome injury. Don’t panic just yet, for he’s promised that they’re not pulling Leong Jun Hao just yet. He said that might change as they evaluate his development.
“No, we don’t have that intention (withdraw) at the moment. But of course, every time we practice, we get wiser. And as I said, we will make a decision when we have all the information, which we feel we can make a good decision.” – Kenneth Jonassen
In the meantime, the coaching staff’s focus will be keeping the much loved Leong Jun Hao in fighting shape. Jonassen stated their goal clearly.
“Our goal is to play next week, of course. But if we withdraw, we’ll withdraw.” – Kenneth Jonassen
His team is following his recovery every step of the way. Key to their plans is taking an informed approach to his participation in these vital tournaments.
“We are looking into what can be done and want to make the right decision in terms of how to play these next four important tournaments.” – Kenneth Jonassen
