South African cricket has confirmed Shukri Conrad as the new limited overs coach. He’ll serve in this role while still coaching the Test team. The announcement follows last month’s sudden, personal resignation of Rob Walter. At 58 years old, Conrad brings an impressive breadth of experience to his new role. He took the Test team to the final of the inaugural World Test Championship against Australia at Lord’s from June 11-15.
Conrad’s appointment couldn’t come at a better time. South Africa are looking ahead to a busy schedule of their own, with trips to Australia, England and India later this year. The team’s initial priority will be their upcoming tri-series in Zimbabwe this July, which includes New Zealand. With South Africa demonstrating commendable performances in recent tournaments, including reaching the final of last year’s T20 World Cup and the semi-finals of the 2023 50-over World Cup and ICC Champions Trophy, expectations are high for the white-ball formats.
A New Chapter in South African Cricket
Conrad’s national team journey started in January 2023 when he first led the Test squad. His leadership saw the team come to life, resulting in their first-ever appearance at the World Test Championship final. Cricket South Africa took a bold step to appoint him as Test and limited overs coach. This dual role seeks to bring coaching together between the various formats of the game.
“Coaching the Test side has been the greatest privilege of my cricket journey, and to now oversee the white-ball teams as well is something unbelievably special,” – Shukri Conrad
In his new role, Conrad hopes to tap into some of the under-utilized or less experienced talent already on the roster. He showcased his vision for South African cricket, especially for the white-ball formats.
“South African cricket has incredible white-ball talent. There’s a strong foundation to build on, and I believe we have what it takes to achieve something special.” – Shukri Conrad
Focus on Upcoming Challenges
South Africa are already looking ahead to their next limited overs test. The upcoming tri-series in Zimbabwe should serve as a primary test for the players as well as the coaching staff. The tournament will provide valuable insights into team dynamics and performance ahead of their challenging tours to Australia and England.
Those next matches are massively important. South Africa is set to co-host the next 50-over Cricket World Cup in 2027 with Zimbabwe and Namibia. Establishing that foundation now will be imperative as they move on and one day host this premier event.
Looking Ahead
With Conrad at the helm, South African cricket has a bright future ahead. In many ways, his leadership style and deep understanding of the game would create the perfect atmosphere to succeed on and off the pitch in both formats. As the team faces its rigorous schedule, fans will undoubtedly be keen to see how this talented squad performs under Conrad’s guidance.
