Cavite Province Braces for Extreme Heat as Forecast Predicts 46°C Heat Index

Sangley Point in Cavite province is set to sizzle this Saturday, May 10. According to the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa), the heat index could reach a blistering 46°C. This extreme temperature would put Sangley Point in the “dangerous” heat index category, which goes from 42 to 51°C. Our short-term forecast suggests that upwards of 30 more places nationwide could be on the precipice of equally damaging conditions.

Pagasa’s statement serves as a reminder that prolonged exposure to heat indices this extreme pose potentially grave health hazards. Continuous exposure to a heat index of 46°C can be extremely dangerous. You may be at risk of heat cramps, heat exhaustion, and potentially heat stroke. Importantly, this means that residents living in impact communities must do everything in their power to protect themselves from these threats.

This was in stark contrast to Pagasa’s readings of much cooler temperatures in other parts of the country. Meanwhile, the monitoring stations around Baguio City are forecasting a much cooler heat index of 24°C. La Trinidad in the nearby province of Benguet is forecast a minimum heat index of 22°C. Both readings are in the “not hazardous” range. This represents a notable improvement in thermal comfort when juxtaposed with the harsh conditions predicted in Cavite.

The agency encourages people to drink plenty of water. They further recommend limiting vigorous outdoor exercise during the hottest parts of the day in places experiencing a very high or extremely high heat index. Pagasa advises the public to stay alert and updated as the weather continues to change with the onset of summer.

As the situation develops, local authorities and health officials are gearing up to provide assistance and information to help residents cope with the impending heatwave. Climate officials are warning all residents, particularly sensitive populations such as the elderly and children, to stay indoors. That’s particularly critical in the heat of the day.
