Scott Bessent, the U.S. Treasury Secretary’s envoy on the initiative, talked with major Chinese officials just last week. Among other meetings, he met with the Chinese vice premier and two vice ministers. We hosted these receptions to strengthen ties between American and Chinese commerce. This initiative moves forward our longstanding commitment to enhance economic connections. Accompanying Bessent was Jamieson Greer, the U.S. Trade Representative, who participated in discussions that President Donald Trump was kept informed about.
In a testimony before the House Financial Services Committee on May 7, 2025, Bessent characterized the negotiations. He described them as “productive.” He pointed out that the Chinese officials who are most relevant to these conversations are in fact key players. They are influential players in developing future trade agreements. Of those roundtables, the Treasury Secretary noted, the conversations were very rich. This is a hopeful sign for the longstanding and deeply-imbedded U.S.-China relations.
Bessent and Greer debriefed President Trump on their respective meetings’ results on Saturday evening. As President of the United States, Trump should be paying close attention to these developments.
