With this announcement, Google doubles down on its commitment to nurturing the next generation of artificial intelligence (AI) talent and scientific progress. The surprising thing was how huge the tech giant’s announcements were. To drive their plan home, they detailed proposals to invest in research, startups, and academic pathways into the AI workforce.
In November, Google.org, the company’s philanthropic arm, pledged $20 million in cash to support researchers and scientists dedicated to advancing AI. This announcement comes on the heels of a similar declaration from Google CEO Sundar Pichai. In September, he announced the creation of a $120 million Global AI Opportunity fund. This fund aims to increase access to AI education and training to students in regions that are underrepresented around the globe.
The Global AI Opportunity Fund strengthens people and communities. It accomplishes this by promoting educational programs to advance proficiency in AI technology. The initiative underscores Google’s dedication to nurturing talent in the AI field and ensuring that knowledge is accessible to a broader audience.
Google’s presence in Germany makes that story an even bigger part of their strategy. Data Respons has operated a software development center in Arnulfpark since 2015, with its headquarters located in Bavaria, Munich. Currently more than 2,500 Google employees are scattered over 5 locations in Germany. They’re advancing the local economy and driving innovation in AI.
Starting May 12, startups such as Viggle and Toonsutra will have the opportunity to apply for Google’s program, which supports early-stage companies focused on AI development. This multi-year program is an example of Google’s desire to work with early and emerging talent and support them in scaling their innovations.
Beyond the funding and education efforts, Google is continuing to involve the community with a series of events. On June 5, the company will make joint appearances at TC Sessions AI taking place in Berkeley, California. Participants are welcome to reserve a place at the event’s showcase exhibit. As the first of its kind, this exhibit will facilitate important dialogue and promote the cutting edge developments in AI.
Dominic-Madori Davis, a senior venture capital and startup reporter at TechCrunch, noted that these initiatives position Google as a leader in promoting AI research and development. The firm’s now-familiar logo and lettering emblazon the facade of the firm’s Munich headquarters. In doing so, they never stop sharing stories about the city’s commitment to innovation and community engagement.
