Sampdoria, another club with a deep tradition and former Serie A champions, has taken a particular beating. For the first time in its 78-year history, it has been condemned by the Ministry to Serie C. The team went on to have a disappointing season, failing to qualify for the relegation playoffs, mercifully needed to keep their league status. Their drop from the top tier was confirmed with a 0-0 tie vs. Juve Stabia Tuesday. This relegation marks a historic low point for the club. That particularly pertains to a club that once birthed its sole top-flight title in 1991 and basked in a golden age during the late 1980s and early ‘90s.
The club’s woes go back much further than this summer, as it opened the season under the leadership of Andrea Pirlo. Even with his celebrated playing career, Pirlo was unable to guide the team to safety. The sixth season brought instability to the club, which led to a noticeable pattern of coaching changes during the complete season. Alberico Evani, a former AC Milan midfielder, took over as head coach in April. Sadly, he was unable to work any wonders on Sampdoria’s behalf.
A Glorious Past
Sampdoria’s storied history is sprinkled throughout with moments of glory. The club won its only top-flight title in 1991. Back in that glittering age, Gianluca Vialli and Roberto Mancini formerly terrified Italian defenses thanks to their swift offensive speed. Their partnership would go on to become legendary, making Sampdoria one of the most dangerous teams in the league.
Sampdoria were crowned league champions and made a memorable journey to the European Cup finals in 1992. They had captured the Italian Cup title in 1994. This trophy represented the club’s long-established last piece of silverware. Since then it has been unable to create new stories like those of years past. The romance around these successes makes their present-day fate all the starker.
A Season of Struggles
The 2022-2023 season became a turbulent one for Sampdoria. After beginning the campaign with plenty of optimism under new manager Andrea Pirlo, the club was immediately met with struggles on the pitch. The succession of coaching changes reflected the internal struggles, as management sought to find a solution to their disappointing performances.
With Evani’s appointment came a hope reborn, but still the losses continued without much respite. Despite his best efforts, Sampdoria’s failure to pick up the vital points they needed would result in an eventual relegation from Serie A. That goalless draw against Juve Stabia was an appropriate conclusion to what had been an incredibly difficult season.
Looking Ahead
With Sampdoria already preparing for life in Serie C next season, the club has very low cash-flow crises over the coming seasons. Aside from the embarrassment of the relegation itself, it especially affects their financial outlook and ability to retain good players. New leadership will be tasked with rebuilding their young roster and plotting a course back to the higher divisions.
