Joseph Suaalii, the 21-year-old powerhouse of the New South Wales Waratahs, is different. A recent injury will mean he is ruled out for the remainder of the Super Rugby season. Those scans confirmed that he’d sustained a jaw fracture. This injury will require highly technical surgical reinforcement, forming a real hurdle for both the player’s and team’s future.
Suaalii’s recent concussion has him missing their next game against the Canterbury Crusaders. Now, it seems, an even more grievous injury has befallen them. Back in New South Wales the Waratahs couldn’t wait to have their big name signing back. Adding to the complexity, though, was the diagnosis of a nondisplaced fracture, as well.
Impact on the Waratahs
Suaalii’s absence will be felt deeply by the Waratahs – who’ve been relying on the 12 Monkeys superstar banging out heaters all season long. He missed four games earlier this season due to a painful toe injury. Upon his return, he had an immediate and impressive effect on the pace of the game. His energetic, aggressive, high-motor style bringing an exciting new element to the Dubs is why losing him now hurts even more.
Head coach Joe Schmidt said that they were devastated by Suaalii’s injury. He saw in the young player’s eyes the fear and confusion that they all struggle with. Sparano focused on the need to maintain a proper playing calendar going forward.
“For Joseph, I think it’s important that he just keeps playing when he’s fit and available to play,” – Joe Schmidt
Schmidt further mentioned that he is wishing Suaalii to heal soon enough to be back for the latter games. With surgery needed and a recovery period of at least four weeks, this prospect now appears unlikely.
Recovery and Future Prospects
The Waratahs’ coaching staff plans to work closely with Rugby Australia to ensure Suaalii receives the best possible care during his recovery process. Dan McKellar, another important member of the leadership inside the organization, said that they were going to help Suaalii through this stormy period.
“This is unfortunate for us and especially for Joseph. We wish him all the best in his recovery and return to full health,” – Dan McKellar
McKellar further reinforced the team’s dedication to facilitating Suaalii’s return to peak condition and availability for future games, including potential selection for the Wallabies.
Looking Ahead
Joseph Suaalii beginning his on-field recovery journey. First and foremost, he’ll want to make sure that he’s completely healed and restored to form. His other injuries this season have fully tested his resolve. Now, this most recent injury adds another unknown layer to his career trajectory.
The 21-year-old has developed into a key player for the Waratahs’ successful season so far. Even with these challenges proving to be hurdles to clear, fans and teammates alike stay hopeful. They are confident he will bounce back from this injury and go on to make an impression in Super Rugby.
